David Cameron leads tributes to England's cricket heroes

12 April 2012

Prime Minister David Cameron led the tributes as England's cricketers, captained by County Durham's Paul Collingwood, won their first major world tournament in 35 years.

England stormed to a seven-wicket victory over Australia at the Kensington Oval on Sunday to claim the ICC World Twenty20 title in style, led by Collingwood, from Shotley Bridge.

Toasting the team's success, Mr Cameron said: "Congratulations to Paul Collingwood and the England Twenty 20 team on becoming world champions for the first time with a magnificent victory over Australia. Let's hope this marks the start of a great summer of sport for England."

Sport and Olympics Minister Hugh Robertson said: "I'm absolutely delighted England have won the World Twenty20.

"They have played exciting and intelligent cricket and are worthy winners. Well done to Paul Collingwood, the team and all the support staff on a fantastic result."

Craig Kieswetter and Kevin Pietersen were hailed as the heroes of the day as their stand of 111 helped them cruise past Australia's 147 for six - with three full overs to spare.
