'Depression' of killer mother

12 April 2012

A woman who drowned her five children in the bath will claim that she was suffering from post natal depression when her trial begins today.

Andrea Yates faces execution by injection in Texas if found guilty of the murder of her four sons and daughter. She will claim that visions of Satan drove her to drown the children, aged from seven down to six months.

The case has polarised public opinion. Women's groups say Mrs Yates, 37, is as much a victim as her children and needs treatment. Opponents say she should be treated like any other killer.
