Detectives left baffled by family man Delroy Grant's sexual attraction to the elderly

Search: Forensic officers at Delroy Grant's house in Brockley

To his friends and neighbours Delroy Easton Grant was a "regular guy" and a "charmer," a family man devoted to his disabled wife, Jennifer.

The couple lived in a three-storey end of terrace in Brockley with their two sons. Grant, 53, acted as a full-time carer.

There was nothing to suggest that the former mini-cab driver and Jehovah's Witness spent his nights committing some of Britain's most depraved crimes.

Even now detectives do not understand his taste for gerontophilia - a sexual attraction to the elderly - but suspect it developed from a sexual encounter with an older person when he was a boy.

Grant was born in Jamaica and brought up by his grandparents after his mother left when he was two. He came to Britain in 1972 as a 16-year-old to live with his father, and attended Kingsdale School near Crystal Palace.

He met and married first wife Janet Watson in 1975 and admits he was "serially unfaithful" to her. They had two children but Janet, now 54 and divorced from him, said he would fly into violent rages and once attacked her when she was pregnant.

Grant has five children with his present wife but has 10 in total with five women. He began offending in 1975 and has 10 convictions, for offences ranging from theft to attempted armed robbery.

He got two years jail for being getaway driver for a gang who tried to raid an East London post office. On his release he met Jennifer, while he was also seeing another woman with whom he fathered three boys. Jennifer is now confined to a wheelchair.
