Dido quits Brits to write

13 April 2012

Dido has pulled out of her appearance at the Brit Awards later this month. She has cancelled all engagements for the next four weeks in order to concentrate on writing and rehearsing for her forthcoming tour.

The singer has three Brit nominations - best female, best album and best single - and is tipped to be one of the show's big winners.

The decision means Dido, 32, will also miss the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, where she is nominated for best female pop vocal.

Over the past few months she has followed an exhausting schedule promoting her album, Life For Rent, which was the biggest seller of 2003.

Dido said: 'The last year has been absolutely fantastic for me. However, the continual commitment to events, promotion and TV appearances has meant that any time for being creative has been non-existent.

'I'm therefore really excited to be clearing the decks and making space to write and record.

'I've also been desperate to get out on the road and this now means that I will finally be able to make that a reality.

'Although I'll be sorry to miss all the fun and celebrations at the Brits, I look forward to seeing everyone on tour soon.'

The world tour is likely to kick off in May and will include a number of British dates.

Her spokeswoman said: 'Dido has been working really hard for the past few months promoting the album.

People think awards shows are just one night, but there is a lot of rehearsing and work that goes into them.

Her announcement is a blow for the Brit organisers. Dido was to be one of the biggest stars at the event on February 17 and is widely expected to win best female.

Her other nominations are best album for Life For Rent and best single for White Flag.

Justin Timberlake is scheduled to appear, presenting the outstanding contribution award to Duran Duran.

Stars performing at the ceremony in London's Earls Court include The Darkness, 50 Cent, Black Eyed Peas, Katie Melua and Beyonce.

Cat Deeley is hosting the awards, which will be broadcast live on ITV1.
