Disabled mother beaten unconscious on bus in row over buggy

Attack: the CCTV image of the suspect
12 April 2012

Police today appealed for information after a disabled mother was beaten unconscious by another parent in an argument over a pushchair on a bus.

They have released a CCTV image of the suspect after passengers who witnessed the assault on the 36-year-old woman, who has the auto-immune disease lupus, failed to come forward.

The woman suffered internal bleeding when the man repeatedly slammed her head on the bottom deck of the No 85 as it passed Kingston University's campus.

The attack occurred after the man ordered her to make way for his buggy as she travelled with her husband and their three-year-old daughter. When the woman refused, he called her a "fat bitch".

Her 32-year-old husband and full-time carer, who does not want to be named, claimed none of the other 80 passengers tried to stop the attack on Sunday September 19, while some laughed.

He added: "My wife was a bloody mess on the floor and her glasses had been smashed into her head. When he was insulting her, people were sitting on the bus laughing.

Detective constable Dave Norman said: "Not one person stopped to give a witness statement and we have not had anyone come forward despite repeated appeals."

Police say the suspect, a 5ft 10in black man, aged about 35, went towards Roehampton. A spokesman added: "He was accompanied by a 5ft 6in, large-built Eastern European-looking woman aged about 35 and a mixed-race young girl."

Anyone with information is asked to call Dc Norman on 020 8721 5849 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
