District line signals delay thousands

Thousands of Tube commuters faced huge delays today after another District line signal failure.

Part of the line's Wimbledon branch shut during the morning peak to enable work on it in time to restore services for those heading for the tennis tournament.

Problems began at the start of service at 5.22am when signals failed near Putney Bridge. This caused a number of trains to be cancelled.

Then, at 5.50am the service closed completely between Parsons Green and Wimbledon. A reduced service was restored just after 7am but this was later stopped.

It is the third time in two weeks that signal failure on the branch line has caused severe disruption.
