Education Secretary Michael Gove pledges to publish literacy facts

12 April 2012

THE Government today pledged to publish detailed literacy results by local areas in a victory for the Evening Standard's Get London Reading campaign.

Education Secretary Michael Gove promised parents better information on school performance to help them make more informed choices on where to send their children.

Today Mr Gove said: "The Standard's campaign has reinforced my own personal commitment to eliminate illiteracy among our children. Tragically, the problem is worst in our poorest inner-city areas. As a result we will publish further data on literacy."

The campaign has so far raised more than £80,000 and more than 2,000 Londoners have volunteered to help.
