'Essex Boys' case set for appeal

The case of the men convicted of the infamous "Essex Boys" murders is to be referred to the Court of Appeal.

Michael Steele and Jack Whomes were convicted at the Old Bailey in January 1998 of the murders of gangsters Pat Tate, Tony Tucker and Craig Rolfe after a trial lasting more than four months. The gangland shootings were later turned into a film starring Sean Bean.

Their case will be referred for appeal today by the Criminal Cases Review Commission, sources said.
