Europe's biggest rubbish tip? Not in my aria

12 April 2012

One of the world's leading opera singers today attacked plans for what could be Europe's biggest waste processing plant.

Soprano Dame Emma Kirkby, who lives near Pinkham Way in north London, fears the smells coming from 300,000 tons of waste every years will be unbearable for locals. There are about 10,000 households within half a mile of the proposed EcoPark and more than 500 lorry loads of rubbish a day could be delivered to the site.

The Pinkham Way Alliance fears that despite "odour control" equipment, there will be a risk to public health at the site, which is close to Muswell Hill. Dame Emma, 62, said: "People are very worried. There has been information from similar sites where residents say the smell is terrible. We want more smaller sites and more recycling."

Dame Emma will perform at St Andrew's Church in Muswell Hill on November 20 to raise money to pay for legal costs, leaflets and an expert to design an alternative to the current proposal.

Tickets: £15 adults, £10 children. www.pinkhamwayalliance.org
