Ex-dictator given life for torture in Argentina

12 April 2012

A former Argentinian dictator was sentenced to life in jail for the torture and murder of 31 prisoners after he led a military coup.

General Jorge Videla, 85, is accused of being the main architect of Argentina's "dirty war" from 1976 to 1983, in which up to 30,000 were murdered.

Videla was on trial alongside more than 20 former military and police officials, who also received life sentences.

Relatives of "dirty war" victims held pictures of their loved ones in court and shouted "murderers" at the defendants.

The judges found Videla "criminally responsible" for the deaths of the prisoners, who were transferred from civilian jail cells to a clandestine prison where they were repeatedly tortured under interrogation before being killed.
