Ex-England coach: Give injured dancers a sporting chance

Recovered: Tamara Rojo went to Spain for specialist treatment
12 April 2012

Former England manager Graham Taylor is backing a project to give top dancers access to the same high-quality medical care as footballers.

Mr Taylor spoke at an event organised by Dance UK, which aims to raise £500,000 for research and then set up a centre modelled on the English Institute for Sport.

Mr Taylor said: "I was shocked to discover the lack of health facilities to look after dancers.

"What Dance UK and their partners are trying to achieve in setting up a National Institute for Dance Medicine and Science will make a huge difference."

Dance UK is seeking a £1 million arts grant. Royal Ballet star Tamara Rojo returned to her native Spain when she broke her foot because nowhere in Britain could provide the specialist treatment she wanted.
