Family of four face £500 fuel surcharge after British Airways hike costs yet again

12 April 2012

British Airways yesterday increased fuel surcharges on long-haul flights to more than £500 for a family of four.

It blamed the rise on rocketing oil prices only weeks after similar action by Air France and Dutch airline KLM.

From Monday, passengers travelling on flights of more than nine hours will see the surcharge increase from £116 to £128 for a return trip.

Price hikes again: BA have upped fuel surcharges for the third time in seven months

It means a family of four will pay £504 in fuel surcharges alone for their holiday, on top of existing charges which already amount to more than £100 per person, and the ticket price.

The surcharge on long-haul flights of less than nine hours will rise from £96 return to £106.

It is the tenth rise since BA first imposed a £5 fuel surcharge in 2004 and comes three months after the last increase.

There will be no change to the £20 return short-haul flight surcharge.

Oil hit a record price of $100.10 a barrel on Tuesday. Industry experts are predicting a surge in oil prices from Easter to as much as $115 a barrel.

There is also a shortage of aviation fuel, which increased one and a half times last year from £307 to £467 a ton.
