First sight of £100million plan for Walthamstow Stadium

Landmark: the plans for 500 new homes would retain the stadium’s iconic art deco frontage

This is the first image of the scheme to redevelop Walthamstow Stadium, one of London's last greyhound tracks.

Developers plan to create almost 500 homes, half of which will be "affordable". The £100 million project would retain the landmark art deco frontage and include eight residential blocks.

Housing association L&Q, which is putting forward the plans, said the redevelopment of the stadium, which closed in 2008 after 70 years, was vital in a borough where 2,000 people are waiting for homes.

David Beckham, who worked at "the Stow" collecting glasses as a teenager, said its demise was "a real shame".
