Forget DIY, here's the DAY generation

Never mind a bit of painting and papering, modern homeowners are tackling the biggest jobs around the house after moving from DIY to D-A-Y ... do anything yourself.

It means that those once content to sand down some woodwork now think nothing of trying to build a conservatory.

Greater expectation, increased ambition and an all-round confidence comes from watching others do it on TV makeover shows or just seeing someone they know achieve it, a study from analysts Verdict for the Focus Wickes DIY Monitor found. Nearly six out of 10 people admit they are now tackling DIY tasks more complicated than they would have touched a year ago, particularly among the 18-34 age group.
