Free university places for children of fallen heroes

12 April 2012

Children of troops killed in Afghanistan and Iraq are to be given a free university education under a new £2 million "help for heroes" plan unveiled today.

Higher education minister David Willetts told the conference that annual £8,200 bursaries would be made available to the sons and daughters of those who have died in active service since 1990. They would cover tuition fees and maintenance and are expected to benefit about 100 people a year.

He said injured service personnel returning from active duty overseas would also be eligible for subsidised education.

More than 600 troops have died on active service in the last 20 years. Mr Willetts said: "This is a small price to pay for the ultimate sacrifice that they have paid."
