Fresh hope on bank charges

Millions of customers hoping for refunds on bank charges were given fresh hope today as campaigners laid out a new legal challenge.

Consumer champion Martin Lewis, of moneysaving expert.com, said top lawyers believe the unauthorised overdraft fees could be deemed unfair under the Consumer Credit Act.

Last month, the Supreme Court ruled that the Office of Fair Trading did not have the authority to determine the fairness of charges. But today campaigners called on the OFT to use different legislation to mount a new attack.

The OFT is still consulting but is expected to decide in the new year whether it will drop the case.
