From Newcastle to London by Boris bike

Punctured: Tarek Nsier expects a £300 bill awaiting him on his return
12 April 2012

It could be the greatest adventure yet undertaken on a Boris bike.

An advertising executive embarked today on a 450-mile cycle ride from Newcastle to London to raise money for charity.

Tarek Nsier, 29, will aim to ride one of the Mayor's hire bikes all the way but admits he may struggle to climb the Yorkshire peaks on a 23kg three-speed bike.

With 12 colleagues from the Th_nk design agency in Clerkenwell, he hopes to raise £20,000 for breast cancer research after a colleague was diagnosed with the condition.

They will cycle up to 90 miles a day, off main roads, and aim to arrive in London on Tuesday evening. Mr Nsier said: "I'm going to be at a bit of a disadvantage. Everyone else has got terrific bikes but mine weighs a ton. It's great as a commuter bike but probably the last bike you would want to be touring the country on  If I can't manage it, there is a stand-by bike for me in the support van."

A Boris bike was taken by train to the firm's Newcastle office and Mr Nsier said he expected to have to pay the £300 fine for failing to return it in time.
