From Trainspotting to 2012 opening

Underworld: Will create celebratory music for the opening ceremony of the Games
12 April 2012

A band which provided the soundtrack for the drug-fuelled movie Trainspotting are to create celebratory music for the opening ceremony of the Games.

Romford based Rick Smith and Karl Hyde of Underworld said they were composing music "to give people something to smile about".

The move reunites them with Trainspotting director Danny Boyle, who is artistic director of the ceremony. Underworld also collaborated on his films A Life Less Ordinary, The Beach and Sunshine as well as this year's National Theatre production of Frankenstein.

Smith, 52, said they were "thrilled, delighted, honoured" to get the job and intend to use "a broad musical palette" to bring Boyle's vision to life. Hyde, 54, who played guitar in Debbie Harry's band, said it was "fantastic and daunting" to be part of the Games.
