Fulham boss's wife bugs his car over affair fears

13 April 2012

The manager of Fulham football club, Chris Coleman, has had his car bugged by his wife, who suspects him of cheating on her.

The 36 year-old former Wales player had a £2,000 listening device and electronic tracker fitted to his Range Rover by a surveillance firm two weeks ago, on the orders of his wife, Belinda, 42.

Mrs Coleman admitted today that she had been spying on her husband. She told a reporter: "This is so hard for me. Please understand that I can't say anything. I need to talk to my husband."

The Premiership manager, who was told by a reporter yesterday that his car was bugged, has been married to former flower arranger Belinda since 1993 and the couple live with their four children in Redhill, Surrey.

But according to friends of the couple, Mrs Coleman felt she could no longer trust her husband and had become obsessed with rumours in recent weeks that he was cheating on her with two other women.

A source close to the couple said: "She suspects he is involved with two other girls and has gone to amazing lengths to try and catch him out."

Mrs Coleman hired Bradfordbased surveillance experts JMB investigations to rig his 4X4 with the top of the range snooping devices. She then reportedly informed the firm's boss, Javid Butt, to send a specialist on a day when Coleman was at a match.

The expert from JMB took four hours to install the high-tech equipment behind the car's dashboard, which allowed Mrs Coleman to listen to any sounds made in the car.

She was also said to have been "especially impressed" by the GPS tracing device, which pinpointed the location of Mr Coleman's car at any given time and relayed the information to his wife on a secure website.

There is no suggestion that she has caught the Premiership manager cheating. Born in Swansea, Coleman played 32 times for his country in a distinguished international career.

During his early playing days at Swansea City he was affectionately nicknamed 'Cookie' - a name that has stuck throughout his career.

He played as a defender for several English clubs including Crystal Palace, Blackburn and Fulham, but his career as a player came to an abrupt end in 2001 after he broke his leg in several places following a serious car crash.

Two years later Fulham chairman Mohammed Al Fayed took something of a chance by appointing the then inexperienced coach as the club's new manager.

In a newspaper interview in 2001, Mrs Coleman spoke about the attention her husband received.

"After Chris and I had been together for a while, I realised that players get so much attention from women. They're like pop stars.

It's strange when you're in Sainsbury's and people come up to Chris and say 'Can you sign the back of my fag packet?' Not just women - men fawn over him too."
