G10 confident of steady growth

THE world's most powerful central bankers on Monday delivered an upbeat prognosis of the global economy and said growth was set to accelerate in the months ahead.

Newly installed European Central Bank chief Jean-Claude Trichet said after a meeting of G10 central bankers in Bangkok: 'We have very much confidence at the global level that growth is picking up and that recovery is gaining momentum.'

Trichet said the world's main regions had all enjoyed an economic upswing during the third quarter. 'The sense of the meeting was that we were probably in an environment of steady and accelerating growth,' he added.
