Gang boys who terrorised East Ham high street write apologies to victims

12 April 2012

Two teenagers who terrorised a high street for two years as part of a six-strong gang have written letters of apology and signed contracts agreeing to behave.

The boys, aged 14 and 15, harassed shopkeepers in High Street North.

They are the first to sign the Acceptable Behaviour Contract in Newham after its council contacted the boys' families following CCTV identification.

The boys agreed to write to their victims, apologising for verbal threats, harassment and physical assault.

June Leitch, the council's member for antisocial behaviour, said: "We will never apologise for being tough on yobs."

Restaurant owner Ali Mian suffered physical confrontation and theft from the gang.

He said: "I'm happy that they have willingly apologised. They are young and have long futures."
