Gardeners win fight for allotments

Alistair Foster12 April 2012

A GROUP of allotment holders was celebrating today after a decision by Thames Water to sell them their prized plots for £30,000.

It follows the Evening Standard's green campaign to encourage Londoners to "grow your own". The move to save Fortis Green Reservoir Allotments in Muswell Hill was backed by TV gardeners such as Monty Don. The water company had originally planned to sell the land to developers.

Now a non-profit trust will buy the plots after a deal was struck on Tuesday. Fortis Green Community Allotments Trust will take control of the land once the sale is finalised.Group spokesman Rupert Lancaster praised the commitment of supporters. The group had hoped to buy the entire site, the final remnant of a green corridor across Fortis Green, but Thames Water withdrew copse land from the sale.
