Gareth knocks Will off top spot

Rob McNeil12 April 2012

Pop Idol runner-up Gareth Gates hit the number one spot in the charts last night, knocking the show's winner, Will Young, off the top.

The 17-year-old from Bradford also became the youngest British male solo star to reach number one with his version of the Righteous Brothers' classic Unchained Melody - the only song to have topped the chart for four different artists.

Gates, who has a severe stammer, was told the news while performing with Young in the Pop Idol Tour at the Birmingham NEC.

But there was no hard feelings from Young, who presented Gates with his youngest singer award from the Guinness Book of Hit Singles in front of 12,500 fans.

Will said: "I am so pleased and I just have to say congratulations."

Gates's single beat off challenges from George Michael, Marilyn Manson and boy band Blue.
