Guilty by DNA 14 years on

A sex offender has been trapped by his DNA and fingerprints 14 years after he attacked an elderly woman in her home.

Carl Fridye, 32, from Stirchley, Birmingham, pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey today to indecently assaulting the 77-year-old in 1989.

Fridye, who has been jailed for sex attacks before, was arrested after a cold case investigation by Met officers from Project Sapphire.

Forensic samples were matched to him through the national DNA database, and fingerprints were also found to be his.

His victim was asleep at her home in Islington when he climbed through a window, hit her in the face and assaulted her, the court heard. She has since died of natural causes.

Fridye, who was remanded in custody for reports, admitted failing to register with police as a sex offender for two months this year.
