Gunman hijacks £30,000 car

12 April 2012

A woman driver is recovering today after a carjacker stole her £30,000 BMW at gunpoint in a busy Essex town centre.

The terrified victim was sitting in her new silver coupÈ 330Ci BMW when she was approached by a young black man who pulled out a handgun, put it against her head and ordered her out of the vehicle.

The robber, described as in his twenties and wearing a dark blue T-shirt and jeans, jumped into the driving seat of the 150mph car in Honey Lane, Waltham Abbey, and raced off.

Minutes later, he collided with a white Transit van in nearby Epping but failed to stop despite efforts by the van driver to block the car. Police are appealing for the van driver to come forward with details of the crash.

The BMW is fitted with a tracker device and was quickly traced to Ilford where it was found abandoned.

A police spokesman said: "The woman has suffered a frightening ordeal and is still not able to give us much detail.

"She was simply at the wheel of her car minding her own business when the man produced a black handgun and told her to get out of the car or he would shoot her."
