Gunman jailed for life after 'execution' of brother's carer

12 April 2012

A CARER for the handicapped who shot dead his disabled brother's own carer with a Mac-10 machinegun was jailed for life at the Old Bailey today and told he may never be released.

Andrew Denty, 30, was described by the judge as "a cold-blooded, arrogant and remorseless killer who carried out a public execution".

Judge Richard Hone imposed a minimum term of 35 years but told Denty: "You are an immensely dangerous individual - any decision to allow your release after 35 years will be a heavy responsibility."

He ordered that his sentencing remarks be passed to the parole board which would eventually consider Denty for release in 2044.

Behind his job as a carer, Denty and his quadriplegic brother Clifford - who had been paralysed in a shooting - ran a major drug ring.

They feared Clifford's dedicated carer, Curtis Smith, might report them to the police.

Denty and Mr Smith, 36, were employed by the same company which provides carers for the disabled.

On a night out at a Limehouse club last September, Denty shot Mr Smith in the back of the head.

Denty, of Southwark, was convicted of murder last month.

The Mac-10 - nicknamed "spray and pray" for its capacity to fire 1,200 rounds a minute - is the favourite gun of the most feared gangsters.

The judge described Mr Smith as "a totally innocent, good man who was doing his job as a carer with conspicuous dedication. He was compassionate, selfless and dedicated - everything you [Denty] are not."
