Gunman opens fire at secondary school

12 April 2012

Up to six schoolchildren were hurt in a shooting involving an air weapon today, it was reported.

Police have been called to a secondary school after it is understood an airgun was fired.

Strathclyde Police said officers were sent to Auchinleck Academy in Ayrshire this afternoon.

A statement said: "There's an ongoing incident at Auchinleck Academy. Officers are in attendance."

Police did not comment on reports that five pupils had been injured in the incident at about 1.40pm on Wednesday, but East Ayrshire Council said medical attention was sought.

The Scottish Ambulance Service said that no one had been removed from the scene.

A statement from the local authority said: "The school responded immediately, informing the police and parents of the children involved, and sought appropriate medical attention.

"The council is working closely with the school to ensure that the school, the children and their families are appropriately supported."
