One in three adults suffer from temporary sleep disturbance, with two-thirds getting less than eight hours of sleep a night - the amount that maintains peak performance.

Yet this can often be improved by ensuring you have the right bedroom environment.

And that doesn't mean mirrors on the ceiling. Instead, invest in a good bed, mattress and set of bedding to guarantee sweet dreams.

You can opt for bedding with a high down content, offering optimum comfort and breathability, or non-allergenic synthetic fillings.

The Aura pillow and duvet set from the Fine Bedding Company is filled with the finest goose down, while its Breathe range - made of natural fibres and polyester - allows you to keep a normal body temperature throughout the night.

Mattresses matter

According to The Sleep Council, mattresses should be replaced every eight to ten years, by which time they have deteriorated by as much as 75 per cent, yet the average couple hang on to their mattress for 15 years or more.

Bed shop And So To Bed has experts at its 18 showrooms to find the best firmness and size of mattress for you. There's a sale on until February 15, with discounts of up to 40 per cent.

Greer's storage bed uses a 'memory foam' mattress that reacts to the sleeper's body temperature and moulds itself to their shape. The bed itself offers storage space through a three-way action.

Poliform's Zoe bed also offers storage in a headboard attached to bedside tables.

For the ultimate in luxury, look to Royal Auping. Its new Royal CM4 is a climatecontrolled, self-heating and airing bed, that drives off humidity and bed mites.

The bed's position can be adjusted using four motors. But it doesn't come cheap - double bed prices start at £5,600.

At the other end of the sleep spectrum, the Clifton bed from New Heights offers clean, simple lines - and a suitably minimalist price tag.

There's a sale on there, too, until the end of January.
