Harold Pinter honoured by Hackney Empire

12 April 2012

Harold Pinter is being honoured in the borough he grew up in with a commemorative room at the Hackney Empire.

Lady Antonia Fraser, the Nobel Prize-winning playwright's widow, formally opened the room last night.

Hackney-born Pinter, who died last year aged 78, will also be remembered with a residency in his name intended to establish the Hackney Empire as a centre for writers.

The first writer in residence will be Jan Woolf, 59, of Cricklewood, whose play Porn Crackers will be presented this year.

It is based on her time as a film examiner at the British Board of Film Classification.

Simon Thomsett, the theatre's chief executive, said: "New writing is the lifeblood of all theatres and this is a fitting way to honour Harold, who was a huge supporter of the Hackney Empire."
