Hewitt cocaine arrest

Companion: Alison Bell

Princess Diana's former lover James Hewitt has been arrested on suspicion of possessing cocaine.

The one-time cavalry officer was caught by detectives in a bar in Chelsea with TV and radio presenter Alison Bell, an ex-girlfriend of Prince Edward. Hewitt, 46, has been seeing her for three months.

Police said they went to the Cactus Blue Mexican bar and restaurant in Fulham Road, near Hewitt's South Kensington home, after a tip-off at 9.30 last night. Hewitt was held on suspicion of possessing a class A drug and Bell, who has worked for Sky News and now works for LBC and CNN, was arrested on suspicion of supplying it.

Both were held overnight at Notting Hill police station. Police sources claim they had to stay the night because they were too drunk to be questioned. Hewitt was also arrested in March on suspicion of assaulting a photographer outside his home. No charges were brought against him.

Hewitt and Bell were bailed until September by police this afternoon. Penalties for possession of cocaine range from a police caution to a maximum of seven years in prison.

A spokesman for Cactus Blue said: "We are looking into the incident internally and are holding our own investigation to try to build a picture of what happened."

The fashionable, wood-panelled bar serves Mediterranean-style food, and the cheapest main course is a £10 hamburger. Wines cost from £12.95 a bottle to £36 with the dearest champagne listed as Krug 1989 for £140.
