Homes flood after copper thieves strike

13 April 2012

A couple have told of their anger after a leak caused by a suspected copper theft washed away their family photographs and letters.

Anne Deli and partner John Harkin were forced to spend Christmas in flats soaked by several inches of dirty water at their council block in South Hampstead.

The flood, at Casterbridge House, which caused thousands of pounds of damage, is thought to have started after a valve fitted to the emergency water mains was stolen for its copper.

Ms Deli, 53, said: "There were gallons of water everywhere. It was really devastating. "

A spokeswoman for Camden council said all insurance claims would be judged on their merits.
