Homing in at Sainsbury's

13 April 2012

SUPERMARKETS group Sainsbury's has hired a new homeware boss and reshuffled its trading team, signalling that there is no truth in reports that it plans to exit home furnishings.

Penny Teale is joining the supermarket chain on 6 December to be business unit director of general merchandise. She is currently trading director of do-it-yourself chain Homebase.

Sainsbury's was a late entrant into non-food ranges. Rivals Tesco and Asda sell vast amounts of crockery, vases, cushions, clothes and DVDs.

New chief Justin King, who unveils his strategy plan on Tuesday, is hoping that Teale will tweak his ranges, many of which have flopped.

King is also recruiting new directors for the food and drink divisions as he strives to improve trading and availability.
