Household items 'poisoning us'

Laura Smith12 April 2012

Harmful chemicals in everyday household items are poisoning our bodies, campaigners warn.

Over 300 chemicals in products like air freshener, shampoo, shower gel and perfume have been linked to cancers and fertility problems. The substances - also found in carpets, shoes, food containers and paints - can also damage the immune system and lead to allergies and asthma.

The Consumers Association warns that the substances could stay in the body for years - and more research is urgently needed into their long-term effects.

Babies may also be at risk in the womb and through their mother's breast milk, says the research published in the association's Which? magazine.

Rachel Clemons, Consumers Association spokeswoman, said: "Often we are aware of toxic chemicals in products such as drain cleaners and fly sprays. But we're not always aware of the harmful chemicals in some seemingly innocent products."

The association said that research had failed to take account of the long-term build-up of the mix of substances on people and the environment. It also said current regulations are not strong enough to protect consumers. "There are still too many uncertainties about the potential effects," said Ms Clemons.

"We would like authorities and industry to take a precautionary approach. If there is a reason to suspect a chemical may be risky, it should be withdrawn until further research is completed."

? Scientists have found that hairdressers have a greater chance of having a small baby or one suffering from birth defects. Chemicals used in sprays and perming could be to blame, warns the Swedish study into nearly 4,000 hairdressers and their babies.
