Heatwave fever is spreading across Europe, and hot on the tail of the UK's scorching weather last week, Spain and Portugal are preparing for record-breaking temperatures.

The hot weather comes as thousands of Brits head off abroad for their summer holidays.

But how hot is it in Spain and Portugal and what are the Met Office advising Brits planning to holiday there?

Here's everything you need to know:

How hot is it in Spain and Portugal?

Today in Spain's capital Madrid and Portugal's capital Lisbon, highs of 39 C are expected with temperatures due to rise over the weekend.

Forecaster Marco Petagna told the Standard that the Iberian region of Spain and the Algarve, in Portugal, could be hit by the hottest temperatures in 41 years by Friday.

The hottest temperatures will be in Iberia, near Portugal, where temperatures are expected to peak at 48C.

The current heat record for Europe is 48C recorded in Athens, Greece, in July 1977.

What heat warnings are in place?

Spain’s meteorological office, Aemet, have issued multiple heat warnings for regions across the country.

Madrid is currently on an amber warning and Badajoz, a city in southwest Spain is on a red extreme heat alert.

The Met Office has advised tourists to take extra care when holidaying in these hot temperatures.

Aidan McGivern of the Met Office said: “[The] exceptional heat over the Iberian peninsula could have serious consequences on people there, and on transport, and on tourists who aren’t used to that heat – and of course locals won’t be used to these kinds of extreme – so certainly something to keep an eye on."

Where else in Europe is seeing hot weather?

Countries across Europe will be battling some sizzling temperatures over the next week.

On Friday, Rome and Paris are expected to reach highs of 34C, while Berlin will peak at 31C.

Increasingly high temperatures in Greece have also caused concern over the potential risk for more wildfires following those that ravaged through the country last week.

Will the heatwave return to the UK?

The weather is already starting to heat up again following the weekend washout that saw heavy downpours and thunderstorms batter the UK.

On Thursday, temperatures will climb back up to 28 C in London and the southeast.

The Met Office has predicted higher than average temperatures for August, September and October.
