One in five fantasises about leaving behind the daily trudge to work but, between the ages of 20 and 55, there are differing levels of temptation. Those needing the most are the 40 to 50-year-olds, with £275,000.

Next were the 30 to 40-year-olds who would want £238,000, before telling their boss thank-you and goodbye. The Abbey National poll found those needing the least were those in the oldest age range, 50 to 55-year-olds, who need a mere £208,000.

The 20 to 30-year-olds asked for £226,000. Only 2 per cent of those questioned said they would remain with their firms if they did 'win big'.
