When Dahl first decided to hire a personal fitness trainer back in 1998, she turned to Dave Marshall, known to his clients as "The Bodydoctor". "It's a balanced programme of exercise, together with watching what you eat, and when you eat," says Marshall. It shaves off inches at high speed. Dahl shrank from size 16 to a size 12 and lost a stone.

Her weight crept up again so she contacted Emily Kelly, a personal trainer and Pilates teacher who took Dahl three or four times a week for runs, aerobic dancing and boxing. After a few months, Dahl was delighted. "Everything looks longer and leaner," she said. "I'm proud of the muscles in my arms and insist on showing everyone."

Last May, still a size 12 but looking leaner in the face, Dahl claimed her increasingly streamlined figured owed more to her move to New York than any diet; "It's all down to living in a tower block," she said. "I live on the third floor and we don't have a lift."
