EYES: Prolonged heavy drinking can cause the vitamin B1 and zinc deficiency which leads to blindness

BREASTS: Studies have shown just one drink a day can increase the risk of breast cancer by 9 per cent

LIVER: Women's livers contain high levels of the hormone oestrogen. This makes it harder for the liver to metabolise alcohol and leaves it more liable to damage

REPRODUCTION: High levels of alcohol reduce the ability to conceive. Drinking 10 units in one session early in pregnancy can increase the risk of having a child with a congenital abnormality

HEART: Inflammation of the heart muscle (cardiomyopathy) is common in alcoholics. Drinking is also linked to arrhythmia, a fluttering or irregular heartbeat

DIGESTION: The toxic effects of alcohol can damage the digestive system, increasing risk of oesophagal cancer, gastritis and colon cancer

FAT: Female bodies have a higher level of fat than male. As they are generally smaller, alcohol will have a greater impact on their body, taking longer to process and metabolise
