How to tell if you're at risk

Doctors use a measurement called the body mass index, or BMI, to determine whether someone is obese.

This is calculated by dividing their weight in kilograms by their height in metres squared.

For example, someone who weighs 9st 8lb (60.78kg) and is 5ft 8in (1.73m) tall has a BMI of 20.3.

A BMI of anything between 20 and 25 in adults is fine, but over 25 is overweight and over 30 is obese.
