I dropped baby, admits au pair

An au pair accused of murdering a baby in her care wept today as she told how she dropped him on the floor.

Eva Nowakowska, 20, said she was holding 10-month-old Jonathan Adeleye by her side in her bedroom when she started feeling dizzy and weak.

She told the Old Bailey: "I stumbled ... falling down and as I was coming down I dropped Jonathan out of my hands. I heard a bang, quite loud.

"Jonathan was crying but it wasn't normal crying. I didn't know what to do. He started blinking very, very fast." Nowakowska, from Poland, had been working as a nanny for and living with Jonathan's parents Sarah and Abraham in Willesden.

She said that after the baby's fall on 3 June last year, she did not know the number to call an ambulance and raised the alarm at a neighbour's house.

Jonathan was found to have a fractured skull and severe brain damage. His life support system was turned off the next day.

Nowakowska denies murder and an alternative charge of manslaughter.

The case continues.
