The student who was Britney Spears' husband for just 55 hours is privately devastated that their marriage did not work out, his friends claimed yesterday.

Spears has publicly insisted her Las Vegas wedding to Jason Alexander, 22, at the weekend was 'a joke that went too far'. But classmates of the 6ft 2in American football player said he thought the vows they took at the Little White Wedding Chapel were serious.

Jared Prescott said: 'No one gets married as a joke - that would be stupid. But Jason is high-spirited and this won't get him down.'

Alexander, who grew up with the singer in Kentwood, Louisiana, revealed yesterday that they decided to marry after watching The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in their hotel suite.

He added: 'We were chilling in the room at about 3.30am and we had so much fun, just looking out at the city and the lights. There was definitely romance there.'
