If you want a wage rise, wear yellow

A report offers advice about dressing for success - and claims it's all about the colour of your clothes

If you are after a pay rise it might help if you make your case while wearing a canary yellow shirt.

If you are feeling fragile, a pink outfit will encourage colleagues to treat you gently.

A report offers advice about dressing for success - and claims it's all about the colour of your clothes.

"Used in the right way, colour can send positive statements about who you are and what you are capable of - and get you noticed by the right people," said psychologist Andrea Mountford, the report's author.

"First impressions are usually made in just three to seven seconds, during which time an employee, boss or interviewer will have unconsciously interpreted the message communicated by the colours worn."

Unfortunately, the report says that black -the staple of most work wardrobes - should be consigned to the bin. The colour can, it claims, make you look cold and unapproachable.

Red, it says, is a better choice as it makes the wearer appear dynamic yet warm.

David Smith, marketing director of Canon UK, which commissioned the report, said: "Whether it is through the work we produce or the environment we work in, colour deployment is essential to inspire both productivity and creativity."
