Inter-City train sent down wrong line

12 April 2012

A train bound for Manchester was sent to Coventry after a signalman put it on the wrong track, it emerged today.

More than 300 passengers on the 9.40am service from Euston, via Rugby, were heading to Coventry - 110 miles from its intended destination - on Saturday when the error was spotted.

The train was sent back to Rugby and put on the right line, arriving in Manchester 35 minutes late. A Virgin Trains spokesman said: "The service was routed along the Coventry line, out of Rugby, instead of the Trent Valley line. Safety was never in doubt and we apologise to passengers."
