iPhone app that tracks celebrities to their London haunts

iSpy: the app reports on stars such as Brad Pitt

A new "stalker app" tracks celebrities across London and creates a map showing where they have been spotted.

Created by a paparazzi agency, the £1.79 CelebAround app for Apple's iPhone is being billed as an alternative tourist guide to London's hottest clubs, restaurants and hotels.

But it is bound to provoke controversy about privacy. For instance, in the last week the app shows that Kate Moss ate at J Sheekey, rock band Kasabian were staying at the Sanctum Soho Hotel, while rapper Jay-Z went to Merah nightclub in Wells Street.

It also reveals that actress America Ferrera was appearing in the final scenes of TV show Ugly Betty in Trafalgar Square.

Matt Smith and Karen Gillan were spotted filming scenes for Doctor Who in Woolwich and Amy Winehouse was seen shopping at John Lewis in Oxford Street.

As well as details of when stars last visited, the app gives you photos of them at the venue, and even tells you how to get there.

When you open the app, it shows a map of where you are, with stars showing sightings of celebrities. Tapping on the stars shows you their name, and a second tap takes you to a screen with the details and pictures of the spot.
To protect the celebrities, the information is embargoed for 12 hours.

However, Matrix Picture Agency, the firm behind the app, say it will reveal where you are most likely to spot them in the future. "When people choose a restaurant, bar or club to go to, it's often based on who has been there before," said Danny Hayward of Matrix.

"This is giving people access to the entertainment industry's little black book of the best places to go.

"The application allows people to search for celeb hotspots nearby, and can even give directions to locations further afield. If people spot a celeb, they can add it to the database of
sightings, even uploading their own photo.

"With CelebAround all this information is at the touch of a screen and anyone can check the favourite places of the stars and then go on to book the same table."

The forward planning option for the device will show where all the top events in London will be held, and which stars are likely to attend.
