Iraq MPs don't want Harry in their country

13 April 2012

Senior politicians in Iraq are calling for Prince Harry's deployment to the country to be cancelled amid fears he would be a "magnet" for insurgents.

Following much debate on whether or not the third in line to the throne should be allowed to serve in Iraq, the Ministry of Defence has decided he will go with his regiment, the Blues and Royals.

But a politician from one of the Sunni minority parties warned the 22-year-old prince would become a "target prize" for terrorists.

Allaa Abdulrazzak said his presence could also damage the royal family's future relationship with Iraq. If the prince boycotted the country he would not be tarnished with being an "occupier", Mr Abdulrazzak said.

Falah Shenshel, a Shia MP, said: "Prince Harry must stay in his own country or he may expose himself to risk or any other thing."

MoD officials are now afraid some of the coverage on the prince's operational tour will endanger the lives of troops serving alongside him.
