Irvine son in bid to leave prison

12 April 2012

The troubled son of the Lord Chancellor Derry Irvine is trying to get out of one of Los Angeles' toughest jails and into a comfortable seaside rehabilitation centre.

Alastair Irvine, who was sent to the US last year to be treated for addiction to crack cocaine, has spent the last nine weeks in Santa Ana Jail after allegedly terrorising a young couple.

Former public school pupil Irvine, 25, appeared in court yesterday to enter a not guilty plea to six charges of stalking, threatening to shoot, having a concealed weapon, two charges of vandalism and breaking into a car. A pre-trial hearing was set for Friday. If found guilty he faces up to 15 years in prison.

Irvine, who has been granted bail but is being held in custody because of an alleged visa violation, wants to be moved to a treatment centre called Cornerstone, which costs up to £460 a day. The centre is advertised as "just 20 minutes from Newport Beach".
