Israel and Palestine go back to peace talks table

Hopes: Hillary Clinton said she was looking for a deal within a year

Israel and Palestine have agreed to resume direct peace negotiations in Washington early next month.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made the announcement in the state department with special Middle East peace envoy George Mitchell at her side.

The talks are to begin on September 2, hosted by President Barack Obama. Mrs Clinton said the US hopes a comprehensive peace agreement can be reached within one year.

The leaders of Egypt and Jordan also have been invited to attend the first session.
