Japan sushi bars fork out £253,000 for a tuna

A bluefin tuna weighing 754lb was sold for 32.49 million yen (£253,000) in Tokyo today, beating the previous record set in 2001 of 20.2 million yen.

The buyers were a sushi restaurant in the city's Ginza district and a chain of sushi bars in Hong Kong.

An official at Tsukiji market said: "It was an exceptionally large fish. But we were all surprised by the price."
