The Duchess of Cambridge will have up to three costume changes a day as she and Prince William spend nine days on their first joint tour of Canada.

The couple are due to touch down in the capital city, Ottawa, at 7pm today (UK time), with Kate having packed more than 30 outfits for the trip.

The tour ends with two days in California, and a black-tie dinner to promote the British film industry in Hollywood.

Royal aides have confirmed that Kate would wear "British clothing", with her recent favourites including Alice Temperley and Reiss. "That is something she thinks hard about when making her choices and promoting the British clothing industry," an aide said.

Thousands of Canadians are expected to line the streets to welcome the duke and duchess - though a protest has been organised by the anti-monarchy group Réseau de Résistance du Québécois to coincide with their arrival in Quebec City on Sunday. The RRQ, which had about 100 members involved in violent scuffles when Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall visited Montreal in 2009, said: "Rest assured that we will do everything in our power to make his [William's] stay with us as unpleasant as possible."

The tour takes in Montreal, Quebec City, Dalvay-by-the-sea in Prince Edward Island, Yellowknife in Northwest Territories and Calgary in Alberta, where they will open the Calgary Stampede, a spectacular rodeo, and be given white cowboy hats to wear.

Jeff Sundquist, managing director of the Alberta provincial government's UK office, said the royal wedding had fuelled respect for the monarchy in Canada.

"I think they will be extremely well received," Mr Sundquist told the Standard. "I think there is a romanticism with the royal family and that has been reignited."

He urged them to explore the Canadian Rocky Mountains when they get their only day off on arrival in Alberta. Many of the scenes for the Oscar-winning film Brokeback Mountain were shot in the province.

Mr Sundquist said: "I really hope they will take some private time and head into the Rocky Mountains. It's truly one of the most spectacular places in the world.

"I know they're both very outdoors-y and it would be great for them to take advantage of some down-time in such splendour."
