One of London's most popular cycle paths is set for an upgrade to help reduce congestion.

Mount Walk in Kensington Gardens, which runs through the royal park from the Broad Walk to Hyde Park, will be closed for several weeks while the work is carried out.

The path is currently shared by pedestrians and cyclists, but park bosses intend to make the route easier for both to use at the same time.

More than 900 cyclists use the route every hour at peak times, the Royal Parks say.

From Monday 4 January to Monday 22 February, the Mount Walk cycle route in Kensington Gardens will be closed to allow improvement works to be carried out as part of the 'TfL Central London Cycle Grid' scheme.

The path was shut to the public on Monday and will not reopen until February 22.

A Royal Parks spokesman said: “The Mount Walk cycle route in Kensington Gardens will be closed to allow improvement works to be carried out as part of the TfL 'central London cycle grid' scheme.

“We are carrying out the works over the winter period to try to minimise disruption to park users.”

The parks project is part of a £54million investment in cycle networks across the capital. The cycle grid is part of Boris Johnson’s 10-year plan to make cycling in London safer and easier.

As well as building works on the path, the Black Lion and Palace gates at either end will be modified to create more space for pedestrians and cyclists as part of the scheme.

The route will also form part of the "quietway" network linking easier cycle routes across London. The project is scheduled to be completed and opened to the public in the summer.
