Kylie proves a hit for HMV

KYLIE Minogue helped HMV Media, the music and books retailer, record a 20% leap in profits during the second quarter of the year.

The diminutive Aussie singer's new album was one of HMV's best sellers during the period, when profits before interest, tax and depreciation surged to £21.5m from £18m a year earlier.

At its Waterstone's bookstore chain, recovery continued, with profits rising from £6.6m to £7.9m. Big-selling titles included books by Jamie Oliver, Margaret Atwood and Tony Parsons, as well as the Harry Potter series.
